Can You Create Bespoke Products?
We’re often asked about our bespoke capabilities by interior designers and their clients. Our in-house design team means we can offer a focused and dedicated design service for bespoke concepts, and our in-house finishing workshop means we can also supply custom finishes where required.
What’s possible?
Almost anything is possible: if you can imagine it and it’s mechanically feasible, Joseph Giles, or a company like us, will be able to make it! We’ve made a huge range of bespoke products over the years, from six foot door pulls to mother of pearl lever handles. For some inspiration and ideas on what we can achieve, view our bespoke gallery. However, designs can be much nuanced, for example a variation in the dimensions of one of our existing lever designs. Factors such as cost and lead time will also affect what’s possible.
Cost
The first element of cost is the design fee. Different companies may have different design fees for creating bespoke products; ours are as follows:
Stock combinations – combining standard components to create a new design, for example, if you’d like the default rose swapped out for a different one, or a non-standard length of edge pull, our fee is £100 to cover all the necessary design work to ensure compatibility, create drawings for sign off, and setting up the product for manufacturing.
Simple bespoke products – a variation on one of our standard products, for example, door pulls at different lengths, or a door knob based on a design, requires a design fee of £425. This fee covers all the initial design work, supplying simple drawings for sign off, and manufacturing drawings for the production run.
Complex bespoke products – if a bespoke product includes moving parts, new materials, or is not based on a standard Joseph Giles product, the design fee incurred can be £1,500 - £2,000. This will allow us to complete the initial design for sign off, and complete manufacturing drawings for prototype costing if required.
The cost of the bespoke product itself will be quoted once we have your requirements, and will largely depend on the quantity of product ordered and the complexity of the design.
Lead time
If your project has the budget, there’s a huge range of bespoke possibilities open to you, but it’s important to take lead times into account.
Whilst bespoke product lead times do vary depending on how bespoke the item is, they typically start at 11 weeks production lead times and increase with complexity.
There may also be smaller lead times for the design drawings prior to production, typically 1 week, and also if the design requires prototyping prior to production. 3D prints usually take around 3 weeks, whilst a fully functioning prototype can add a 4-6 week lead time.
